How drinking can sabotage your weight

If you like to have a drink of alcohol this is just fine as long as you don’t overdo it but I know it is so easy to be drinking lots of calories without even realising it.

Having a few tricks up your sleeve to help you can be useful and some of them are really obvious

  • have slimline mixers with gin or vodka
  • have soda with white wine to make it go further
  • try a 5:2 approach, 5 days alcohol free 2 days when you have a drink
  • Volunteer to drive friends and family to restaurants/pubs so you can say no
  • don’t drink on an empty stomach
  • avoid salty snacks such as nuts or you will want more to drink

But don’t feel you need to cut out alcohol altogether and when you have a drink enjoy it.  I had 2 delicious glasses of Blackberry and Elderflower Pimms with Schweppes Slimline Lemonade while watching Andy Murray win Wimbledon last week and drank it guilt free!

Have you booked your next holiday

Apparently this weekend was the busiest for travel agencies and sites for people looking to book their next holiday.

I am sure that this is because January seems such a long month after all the Christmas and New Year festivities.

So we sit down and dream about the holiday we are planning, we probably book it and perhaps even go on to research some of the things we will do when we get there.

If you are doing this and you are overweight you will also probably promise yourself that you will lose weight so you will look and feel great when you get there.  I know that if you don’t take action right now that will be thing that doesn’t happen.

I can remember many times of saying this at the start of year only to find myself in despair in the weeks before my holiday trying to find clothes I would be able to wear.  I haven’t had this problem for the past six years as I solved my yo-yo dieting problem for good.

Do you like something sweet?

Often when we are trying to lose weight we crave something sweet. It is difficult at times to resist this. If you really are unable to give up chocolate then if you can try to eat 70% dark chocolate you will find that a square can be very satisfying.

However if you make yourself something sweet yourself as treat it can also be very satisfying and you can make things such as flapjacks for a lot less calories than you would buy in the shops and enjoy them all the more because you have made them.

These are ones that keep well in an airtight tin or box and are also great for sharing.

Serves 16
120 calories each
10 minutes to prepare cooking time 25 minutes
100 Grams of Low Fat Spread
120 Grams Soft brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon golden syrup
225 grams rolled oats
½ tsp ground all spice
Melt the low fat spread with the sugar and golden syrup
When melted add the oats and all spice and mix thoroughly
Spoon onto a baking tin 11 inches by 8 inches, which is lined with baking parchment.
Press down so it is level then bake at 190 degrees for 20-25 minutes until golden brown
Cut into 16 portions and leave to cool – Store in an airtight tin

Losing weight gets you into shape!

It is amazing when you lose weight that you can’t imagine yourself being bigger than you are now. This hit me in the face when I was helping my daughter with some photographs for her ebay shop.

As she helps people declutter their houses at she also helps them to sell clothes they no longer wear. These are all good quality items so she decided to invest in some mannequins to properly show them off.

Of course because people are of different sizes she ended up with three, one which is a size 8-10 the second a 12-14 and the third a 16-18. Lined up together really made me think as I was once a size 20 so bigger then the largest one but am now a size 10-12.

The thing that struck me most about the mannequins however is that they have no lumps and bumps but they do diminish as you lose weight and dressing well for your size is the answer whatever you weigh.

I know that when people are trying to lose weight they often think they can’t eat anything special or interesting which is why I focus my Weight Away Plans on trying to provide interesting and tasty recipes

Great Tasty Food for under 500 calories


450 grams lean lamb steak cubed
100 grams button mushrooms
4/5 shallots roughly chopped
2/3 cloves of garlic chopped
Beef Oxo Cube
125 mls white whine
1 tsp cornflour or gravy granules
1tsp olive oil

Serve with Broccoli, Carrots and 150 grams of New Potatoes per person
To Cook
Take the cubed lamb and add to a large pan with the olive oil and cook until the meat is browned about 5 minutes. Add the shallots and garlic and cook for a further 2-3 minutes unto they are softened. Add the mushrooms and stir then add the white wine cooking for a further few minutes.
Make up the Beef oxo cube with 200 mls of boiling water then add to the pan with a Bouquet Garni and simmer for about 25-30 minutes or until the meat is tender.
Meanwhile cook to new potatoes, broccoli and carrots.
Just before serving remove all the meat and vegetables from the pan and put in a warm serving dish.
Add 100 mls of water with either cornflour or gravy granules to thicken the remaining cooking liquid and this will make delicious gravy.
All this for just under 500 calories

Tasty Beef Goulash for under 500 calories !

I am now starting to cook some casserole type dishes for the autumn/winter season. These are a great way to fill up, eat your vegetables for the day but also are so yummy and easy to do.

Here is a Beef Goulash I cooked to eat while we were watching the Rugby on Saturday night. The Goulash was great-shame about England!

Hearty meal for 475 calories per portion

Serves 4
475 calories per portion
20 minutes to prepare cook for 2 hours

450 Grams lean stewing beef
1tsp olive oil
I tablespoon of flour
2 tablespoons of paprika
1 red pepper chopped
1 onion chopped
2-3 cloves of garlic chopped
400 gram tin of chopped tomatoes
100 grams of mushrooms chopped
1 beef oxo cube
2 tablespoons of natural yoghurt
300 grams of uncooked pasta

To Cook
Cut the meat into cubes then cover in the flour and season. Add the olive oil to a pan and brown the meat for 5-6 minutes. Remove from pan and put in a casserole dish.
Sauté the onions and garlic in the pan for 1-2 minutes then add the chopped red pepper and sauté for a further minute.
Then stir in the paprika, tomato puree, beef oxo cube and a splash of water so you can coat all the vegetables. Add the mushrooms and cook for a further minute then finally add the tin of tomatoes and stir until all mixed together.
Add all this to the casserole dish and place in an oven at 180 degrees or 160 fan and cook for approximately 2 hours.
To serve cook the pasta according to instructions divide between 4 servings plates then top with the goulash and spoon a blob of natural yoghurt to finish.
The goulash dish will freeze so if you are serving one portion each has 75 grams of pasta.
