I know that when I was overweight I worried about how I looked; I stressed about what to wear and I was concerned about what people thought of me.
But my biggest worry was my health and reading articles this week in the press about the effects of processed foods has made me really grateful that I changed my eating habits.

Eating factory-made food including cornflakes, pizza and chocolate bars every day increases the risk of cancer by a quarter, the first study of its kind suggests.
Additives in ready meals, packaged snacks and shop-bought cakes may combine to trigger the disease, researchers warned last night.
Cancer caused by highly processed food would be over and above the harmful effects of the sugar and fat it contains, scientists fear.
The West’s increasing taste for packaged food on the go could fuel a further rise in cancer in the future, they say.
French researchers studied the diets of 105,000 people, of whom 2,228 developed cancer over an eight-year period. The quarter who ate the most “ultra-processed” food were 23 per cent more likely to get any type of cancer than the quarter who ate the least, researchers report in The BMJ.

Last week I attended the ‘BigFatChatLive’ Event which was being held by Staffordshire Council to discuss the obesity levels in the county. They assessed 1 in 4 adults to be obese and frighteningly 1 in 5 children as well.
This makes 190,000 people in the county as obese with the associated health risks that this can lead to. As the NHS is under so much strain in Staffordshire this is all the more worrying. The risks to your health of being obese are many. Obesity can result in heart disease, stroke, cancer and Type 2 Diabetes. Losing even a small amount of weight can help to minimise the risks. I decided to watch the BBC 3 programme on line that shows the effects of obesity through an actual post mortem.
I think that anyone who is carrying too much weight would want to take action to minimise the risk of what fat can do your organs and seeing this in such a graphic way really made me think.
I can remember being given the advice to microwave a pork pie for 30 secs to see how much fat came out of it. The person who suggested I did this said it would put me off pork pies for life. They were right and you can do the same with a sausage roll but this seems all a bit trivial when you see the fat inside a body.
People who contributed to the show talking about their own weight problems had spoken about health problems but also lack of self esteem and confidence. Their courage to speak out was based on the worries they had about their health. When you were able to see the fat surrounding the organs in the the post mortem and in particular the impact on the liver it was terrifying.
The fact that 64% of the UK population are overweight or obese now and that is expected to rise to 75% by 2035 is really worrying. Particularly when we already know that 90% of people with Type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese and that is just one of many health risks. You can add heart disease, stroke, cancer and liver failure.
