Does your weight get you down in the heat?

It has been so lovely this week and some days a little too hot to be working but we shouldn’t complain.  It made me think though about the things that got me down in the good weather when I was overweight and now they don’t

  • no longer having thighs that rub together in the heat that used to make me really uncomfortable
  • being able to wear a pair of shorts without thinking that everyone would be passing comment about how I look
  • not having to search the shops for something to wear because nothing fits.
  • being able to have an ice cream in public and eating it without thinking that everyone would be looking at me and criticising me for eating it because I was fat.
  • looking forward to eating salads because I enjoy them not eating them because I am on a diet
  • being able to enjoy exercise without being out of breath
  • and finally knowing that I can look at my holiday photos and not see the picture that made me lose weight

How drinking can sabotage your weight

If you like to have a drink of alcohol this is just fine as long as you don’t overdo it but I know it is so easy to be drinking lots of calories without even realising it.

Having a few tricks up your sleeve to help you can be useful and some of them are really obvious

  • have slimline mixers with gin or vodka
  • have soda with white wine to make it go further
  • try a 5:2 approach, 5 days alcohol free 2 days when you have a drink
  • Volunteer to drive friends and family to restaurants/pubs so you can say no
  • don’t drink on an empty stomach
  • avoid salty snacks such as nuts or you will want more to drink

But don’t feel you need to cut out alcohol altogether and when you have a drink enjoy it.  I had 2 delicious glasses of Blackberry and Elderflower Pimms with Schweppes Slimline Lemonade while watching Andy Murray win Wimbledon last week and drank it guilt free!

So can you eat pasta and lose weight?

Yet again there has been so much in the press about what you can and cannot eat and this week pasta was put into the equation.

I use pasta in a lot of my Weight Away recipes as it is filling and can be healthy, it just really depends of the portion size and what you have with it. It is best of course to use wholemeal pasta.

One of my favourite recipes is having it with Salmon.  The beauty of this is that you have your fibre but also boost your intake of Omega 3.

This recipe is quick to cook and easy to do for the whole family and really doesn’t have to be expensive.

Just as a rule of thumb if you are trying to lose weight look at the portion size of pasta you be having as a woman shouldn’t exceed 75 grams dry weight and you may find as I do that 60 grams is enough.  Adding vegetables to any pasta dish makes it healthy and delicious.

Lovely healthy meal for 400 calories

Salmon and Prawn Pasta

To serve 4 at 400 calories per portion 30 minutes to prepare and cook.

Ingredients

275 grams of salmon fillets and 100 grams of cooked prawns.

100 grams of broccoli, 75 grams of cherry tomatoes , 1/4 of a red pepper thinly sliced, 2 shallots,  3 cloves of garlic, 2 tsp of tomato puree, 100 mls of white wine, 400 mls of vegetable stock and 50 mls of double cream and 1 tsp of olive oil

Allow 75 grams of pasta per person  I used tagliatelle

Bake the salmon in a dish in an oven with the cherry tomatoes at 180 degrees for about 15- 20 minutes.

Cook the broccoli and set aside

Meanwhile chop the shallots , red pepper and garlic very finely and gently saute in a pan with the olive oil.  When they are all soft add the white wine and reduce by half. Add the tomato puree and vegetable stock and simmer until about half in volume.  At this point you can choose to either liquidise the sauce or strain it to take out the vegetables.  personally I leave them in as I think it gives the dish extra texture.

At this point you should add the cooked prawns the cooked salmon now flaked into pieces, broccoli and cherry tomatoes and warm through then add the double cream.

Time cooking your pasta to be cooked by this time and if your sauce isn’t thin enough you can add a drop of the pasta water at this point.

Serve the pasta in bowls and top with the salmon sauce.

If you like food with a kick you can always add a few drops of tabasco to the sauce.

Does sport want to make you exercise?

There is so much sport to watch at the moment on the TV.  From Tennis to Motorsport and of course football although watching England has been painful.

I feel though that it is inspiring to see people who are fit and healthy exceeding at something they enjoy but one of the things that I find helpful is that I can exercise at my local gym and still watch the sport on the TV while I am on the treadmill or bike.

One of things that really helps when you ate trying to lose weight is doing some regular exercise as not only will this help to boost your metabolism but it will also tone you up as you lose weight and this can be very important if you have a lot of weight to lose.

So if you are not exercising the best advice I can give you is to find something you enjoy doing because if you don’t you won’t keep it up.  I know so many people who have signed up to contracts at gyms never to go after the first few visits.  Just walking can help but make sure you find time to do some exercise and you really will notice the difference
