How to stop clutter

One of the things that I found hard when my weight fluctuated so much was storing clothes in lots of different sizes.  I can remember times when only about 20% of my clothes fit me! Having now lost weight and been at the same weight for 6 years I now find it is only changing fashion and the fact that clothes wear out means I get rid of them.

However one the best things I do, on the advice of my daughter Kate who runs a decluttering business at http// is to store my winter clothes shrink wrapped over the summer and do the same with my summer clothes over the winter.

This weekend I have just sorted through my winter clothes for those I want to keep and have shrink wrapped them and put them in loft.  I have opened the bag with the summer ones and know that they will all fit which is great!

It is useful to work closely with Kate as she can sell clothing for people who have lost weight and equally has lots of bargains in her ebay shop for people who are looking for smaller clothes.

Who are you losing weight for?

It was interesting to see the new programme on the BBC this week called Losing Weight For Love. Personally whilst I think it is always helpful to have something or someone to motivate you to lose weight the only person you should really do it for is yourself.

Feeling good about myself through eating healthily and being at a healthy weight is probably one of the best things I ever did and whilst it was good to get praise from others including my family the only way I would ever have done this was by doing it for myself.

Want to lose Weight is your choice food or fad?

I see so many advertisements about losing weight quickly by using replacements for foods and there is no denying they work in the short term but what happens afterwards

Typically if you lose weight quickly by replacing food with shakes, supplements or pills you will lose weight because you will be eating less calories but not only are you losing lbs in weight you will also lose muscle and you will spend a fortune.

You can do so much with veg!

One the latest food crazes is to use cauliflower to make rice. This is a great way to increase the amount of veg you eat as well as cutting down on carbs.

You just break the cauliflower up then whizz it in a food processor till it looks like rice.

Add it to a drop of oil and add spices that you like and hey presto you have an accompaniment to any dish and if you use asian spices you are good to go with a curry.

Saw this on Channel 4 Sunday Brunch this morning with Madeleine Shaw and just think it is a great thing to add to my food plans at and I will be trying this!


Aubergine Stew with Cauliflower Rice Recipe

For the aubergine stew

3 tbsp coconut oil or butter

2 aubergines, cut into 5cm cubes

2 red onions, finely chopped

1 tbsp harissa

4 garlic cloves, crushed

1 tsp ground cumin

1 tsp ground coriander

1 tsp ground cinnamon

400g can chopped tomatoes

2 tbsp natural yoghurt

Chopped fresh coriander, to serve

Salt, to taste

For the cauliflower rice

1 cauliflower, stalk removed and roughly chopped

1 tbsp coconut oil or butter

1 tsp turmeric

¼ tsp ground ginger


For the aubergine stew

1. To make the aubergine stew, heat the oil or butter in a pan and cook the aubergines with a big pinch of salt for 5 minutes until they turn golden brown, stirring every now and then.

2. Throw in the red onions, harissa, garlic, cumin, coriander, cinnamon and a pinch of salt and keep stirring until the vegetables are well coated in the spices and the mix is fragrant.

3. Add the tomatoes and cook on a medium simmer for 15–20 minutes, stirring every 5 minutes.

For the cauliflower rice

1. To make the rice, put the roughly chopped cauliflower into a food processor and process for a few minutes until you get a rice-like consistency. (If you don’t have a food processor, grate the cauliflower using a box grater.)

2. Heat the oil or butter in a saucepan over a medium heat for 1 minute, then add the spices and stir for 1 minute more until fragrant.

3. Throw in the cauliflower rice and sauté for 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until cooked through.

4. Serve the aubergine stew with the rice, a dollop of yoghurt and some coriander scattered over.

The aubergine stew can be frozen or kept in the fridge for a few days.


Have you lost weight only to put it back on?

If you have lost weight and then put it back on maybe once or twice, then you are becoming a yo-yo dieter.  I know that this happens when you follow a diet that isn’t something that you can stick to and doesn’t change your eating habits for good.

I say this from experience as I was a typical yo-yo dieter trying every slimming club and fad diet I saw, until I decided to look at eating healthily for life.

This helped me to lose over 5 stone between 2009-2010 but more importantly to keep the weight off and set up my own weightloss business which is based on eating ordinary foods but getting extraordinary results.
